Vibeke’s UV Protection Gel SPF30 Review
Now here's a product that I barely see any reviews online- which is quite a shame, I feel, considering that it is one of my favourite products ever. And that is Vibeke's UV Protection Gel SPF30.
I have tried my fair share of Japanese sunscreens -including the raved about Biore sunscreens. However the alcohol content of the Biore sunscreens was not doing wonders to my already dry skin. Not to mention the fact that you only get about 50ml of sunscreen with each purchase, and it was simply too pricey for a student like me.
Anyways I stumbled upon the Vibeke's UV Protection Gel while looking for a new sunscreen at my local drugstore. To be honest, what attracted me at first was the price. For about the same price as the Biore sunscreen I have been using previously, you get about four times the amount! I was also intrigued by the fact that it was alcohol free. While not necessarily a bad ingredient for everyone, my own dry skin seems to be particularly sensitive to alcohol, which is why I try and avoid it as much as I can.
However the cheap price and the fact that I have barely seen the brand being mentioned anywhere meant that I was pretty apprehensive about the quality. I bought it anyways, because I quite desperately needed sunscreen at that point. I am so glad I did, because I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the sunscreen.
The sunscreen comes out of the bottle as an opaque white cream that melts into a beautiful watery gel when you start applying it. It doesn't leave a white cast whatsoever, and despite the lack of alcohol it isn't tacky or heavy at all. Instead it only leaves an extremely light glossy film over the skin that makes your skin glow and feel like velvet- something I personally love, because my skin is so dry. However this glossy film does get absorbed into your skin too after a few minutes.
I was quite surprised at the smell though- it smelled a lot like baby powder. So I went to do some online research and I was right! It does contain baby powder, which I find quite unusual. However the smell isn't unpleasant and doesn't linger either. Also, it seems like the baby powder is what makes the product have its non-tacky, smooth finish.
Along with baby powder other extra moisturizing ingredients it contains are Licorice Root Extract, Hydrolyzed Collagen, and Aloe Vera Extract. While I certainly do enjoy having these products in the sunscreen, its in minimal amounts so I highly recommend using another moisturizer or hydrating toner along with this sunscreen.
It is also a non-irritating formula, after months of daily wear I can say that it has not broken me out or caused any reactions on my skin, unlike some other sunscreens I have used that has left my skin itchy and irritated.
The only real con I would say is the fact the it is only a SPF30 sunscreen, which might be too little for some people. However for daily wear when I only am under the sun a few minutes a day it works just fine. And there's also the fact the there isn't actually that much of a difference between SPF 30 and 50 if you're applying the right amount.
Overall this has become my favourite sunscreen, and what I have been using daily for the past few months now, with no negative effects. So if you're like me and looking for a cheap sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast, absorbs easily into the skin, doesn't irritate, and is hydrating, this is perfect for you.
